Even as a government shutdown appears more and more likley, no one can an say with certainty exactly who will be affected. Agency heads and supervisors are scrambling now to figure out how they will respond, who will stay on the job, and which services may be halted.
If it occurs, it would begin at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday morning and could have a direct effect on some UCDC students interning for federal agencies, museums, or the District of Columbia government. It probably will not affect the work schedule of those working for non-profits, NGO’s, members of Congress, the federal courts, news media, or political appointees and others deemed “essential employees.’’
It is important for you to stay in touch with your work supervisor and comply with their instructions. If you are asked to stay home, please inform your program administrator. There is no reason to believe it will have any effect on your credits for participating in the program.
In the unlikely event that the shut-down is prolonged, we are discussing programs and excursions for those without work.
Though a shutdown would close Smithsonian Museums (even the zoo!) and some monuments, there are countless other places to visit. Most of the faculty are in the building throughout the day and will extend their office hours. It’s a fine time to make their acquaintance and get a head start on your academics.
A shutdown would be a historic event with national consequences. Observe closely. You all have front row seats.
